Philander confident of early recovery
Vernon Philander is nursing a hamstring injury ahead of the second test against New Zealand.
JOHANNESBURG - Vernon Philander is confident he will be fit to play in the second test against the Black Caps.
Rory Kleinveldt has been called up as cover for Philander, who has aggravated a hamstring niggle.
Philander says they will only make the call later this week.
"I'm confident but you can't rush hamstrings so we'll have to wait and see. We'll make a decision later this week."
Philander has responded to critics who have said he is not in control of his off cutter.
After destroying the NZ batting line up, picking up 5/7 in just six overs, Philander says his consistency proves he is in control.
"I've been training and that leads to consistency. I think that's coming out well at the moment."
He was named man of the match in the first test after the Proteas annihilated the visitors by an innings and 27 runs.
The second test gets underway on Friday at Port Elizabeth.
