Peak traffic expected on major highways
RTMC says traffic volumes are to increase as commuters make their way home.
JOHANNESBURG - As commuters rush back to their various home provinces, the major highways countrywide picked up in traffic volumes on Sunday afternoon.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC)'s Ashref Ismail said the traffic volumes along interprovincial highways would peak in the mid-afternoon, but that motorists had already started to fill the roads.
Ismail also said the roads would only start clearing at around 7 o'clock on Sunday evening.
He has asked that drivers remain vigilant.
"We want to appeal to road users to exercise extreme caution and please ensure that everyone in their vehicles is buckled up."
Ismail also urged motorists to be patient at certain tollgates that are experiencing high traffic volumes or stop-and-go sites as a result of construction.
While it was originally suspected that the death toll of more than 1300 people killed on the roads this festive season would increase this weekend, the RTMC reported no major crashes in the past two days.
