Increased police visibility expected on major routes
The RTMC said more police will be placed on major routes as holidaymakers return home.
JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Saturday pleaded with South Africans to drive carefully as the festive season drew to a close.
Thousands of commuters were expected to return to their respective provinces for the reopening of schools next week.
The RTMC said they were worried the death toll could rise significantly this weekend.
Close to 1,300 people lost their lives on the country's roads since the beginning of December.
The corporation's spokesperson Ashref Ismail said there would be a larger police presence on all major inter-provincial highways.
"There will be increased visibility along major routes with specific focus on violation of road rules, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, with marked and unmarked cars."
Ismail said all types of vehicles were responsible for the accidents even though many motorists blamed taxi drivers.
He also said motorists must be alert when driving.
The road corporation said there were dozens of cases reported of drivers not wearing their seatbelts, speeding and passing each other on highways on barrier lines in December.
