JOHANNESBURG - Time is running out for registration to attend public hearings on electricity giant Eskom's application for a 16 percent tariff hike for the next five years.

If the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) gives the proposed 16 percent tariff hike the green light, it will more than double the price of electricity over the next few years.

Nersa is expected to make a decision on the proposal in February 2013.

Stakeholders and members of the public have until Friday to register for the hearings, which start on 15 February.

Nersa says the deadline for written submissions passed on 20 November.

Its spokesperson, Charles Hlebela, says "The public hearings will offer an opportunity for the stakeholders and the public to make oral representations regarding Eskom's application."

Hleba said people could register online.

"Stakeholders and the public can still register today and tomorrow [by clicking on the "public hearings" tab] at"
