JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Tuesday said it expected thousands of vehicles on the country's major routes, as holidaymakers returned home this week.

Preliminary statistics have revealed 1,208 people have died on national roads since the beginning of the festive season.

But several accidents on Tuesday left a number of people dead and scores of others injured.

The corporation's spokesperson, Ashref Ismail, urged motorists to drive cautiously during the busy period.

He said they were expecting traffic volumes to peak from 3pm on Wednesday and this coming weekend.
