JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Tuesday said toll concessions across the country were gearing up for a peak in the number of cars making their way home as the festive season drew to an end.

Traffic volumes on the N1 between Pretoria and Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Cape Town as well as on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban are expected to spike by tomorrow afternoon.

The RTMC's preliminary statistics revealed that 1,208 people died on the country's roads since the start of the holiday season.

After a quiet five days with no major crashes, Tuesday saw a number of accidents where several people lost their lives.

The corporation's spokesperson Ashref Ismail said, "Starting on Wednesday we will see an increase on major routes."
