JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned motorists that officers will have no mercy when dealing with people who break the law.

Spokesperson for the corporation, Ashref Ismail, on Sunday said more than 2,000 people had been arrested for drunken driving since the start of the festive season.

Ismael said drivers under the influence were their biggest problem.

"The RTMC, together with provincial authorities, will be on high alert for drunken motorists.

"Road blocks and roving patrols will be merciless with drunken culprits."

Ismael also urged motorists to be patient on the roads as traffic volumes are on the rise and expected to peak again on Wednesday.

According to the latest figures released by the RTMC last Thursday, 1,068 people were killed on the country's roads in the period between the 1- 25 December.
