JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Public Works and First National Bank (FNB) on Thursday reached an agreement on the naming rights of the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

This brought to an end weeks of intense negotiations which, at one stage, had organisers ready to move cities to find an alternative venue for the opening and closing ceremonies.

The FNB Stadium will now be known as the National Stadium, a name that will be used exclusively during the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2013.

Minister of Public Works Thulas Nxesi said this was the final piece of the puzzle.

"This agreement unlocks the last phase of the printing of the tickets which have been in storage in the country. The fans will be happy to know where and when they can collect their tickets as soon as the Local Organising Committee makes the necessary preparations."

The Afcon showpiece kicks off on January 19, 2013 until the February 10, 2013.
