Long distance trains are 'safer'
Some commuters believe trains are the best form of transport during the festive season.
CAPE TOWN - Some train commuters say long distance trains are not only cheaper but much safer this time of year.
Hundreds of commuters are at Cape Town Station waiting to board the Shosaloza Meyl to various parts of the country on Monday.
At least 123 people have died on Western Cape roads since the start of December.
Lea Decker is traveling to the Northern Cape for the holidays.
The 52-year-old, who is a domestic worker in Bellville, says she is looking forward to seeing her children.
She says after travelling by taxis for many years, she realised that long distance trains were the safest.
"I once witnessed a taxi accident and it was really bad."
Decker says she also saves about R200 if she takes the train.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg's Park Station is a lot calmer as last minute travellers make their way to their loved ones for Christmas.
