Bank users have been urged to be vigilant this festive season as criminal activity increases.

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) on Friday urged the public to avoid withdrawing large sums of money as robbers often target bank clients during this time of the year.

It also warned members of savings groups to be vigilant when depositing or withdrawing money, as they have been targeted by criminals in the past.

Sabric's Kalyani Pillay said there are criminal elements that are systematically targeting innocent bank users.

"The banks and Sabric would like to advice all people using ATMs to please be extra vigilant. Don't accept help from anybody at an ATM."

Meanwhile, ATM bombers have targeted the Western Cape.

Over 20 ATM bombings have occurred in the province since January.
