Batsman Alviro Peterson has resigned as the captain of the Highveld Lions.

JOHANNESBURG - Alviro Peterson has stepped down as the captain of the Highveld Lions in all formats of the game.

His role will be filled by Stephen Cook, who jumps straight into action on Thursday when the Sunfoil Series resumes.

The Lions host the Warriors at the Bullring, looking for their second win of the competition.

Cook says he is delighted to take over the captaincy.

"I'm honoured to captain the Lions and I'm more than happy to take over. Alviro has done a fantastic job and will continue to [provide] advice."

Peterson will be rested during the upcoming game.

Cook says it will leave a big gap in the side.

"Alviro is a serious batsman and a seasonal campaigner, so it's a big loss having him rested. But I'm sure we will make a plan and hopefully get the runs."
