Stop Madiba speculation - Presidency

The Presidency says it is the only source of authentic information on Madiba’s health.

Presidency urges public to ignore social networks as authentic sources no Mandela's health.

JOHANNESBURG - The Presidency has appealed to members of the public to avoid speculation on Nelson Mandela's health on social networking sites.

It has been over 48 hours since there was any official and comprehensive update on the former president's health.

The 94-year-old was admitted to a Pretoria hospital 10 days ago with a lung infection.

On Saturday, the Presidency revealed that Madiba also underwent surgery to remove gallstones.

Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj has not divulged any new details, but says the public must not speculate on his health.

"I would [like to] appeal to everyone to actually ignore what is appearing on the social networks. There is only one authentic source of information and that is the Presidency.

"Often what is on the social networks is misinformation."

In January 2011, Mandela was treated at Johannesburg's Milpark Hospital for a respiratory infection.
