Govt. hands over Boystown houses
The handover of Boystown Housing Development is going smoothly.
CAPE TOWN - The Human Settlements Department says it has already begun allocating homes to beneficiaries in the controversial housing project in Nyanga.
The first phase of the Boystown Housing Development, which consists of nearly 500 units, has now been completed.
The project has been marred by infighting over the past eight years.
There have been several incidents of infighting among community members.
Some people have accused their leaders of hiring outsiders to work on the job.
Department spokesperson Bruce Oom says so far things are going well.
"So far the moving in has been peaceful and we are very happy to have reached this point because Boystown has had many problems."
The province has a housing backlog dating to over 20 years.
