NW ANC secretary gunned down
North West ANC Secretary Obuti Chika was shot dead outside his house in Klerksdorp on Friday.
MANGAUNG - The ANC's secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the shooting of an ANC leader in the North West is a result of the opportunism and materialism in the ruling party.
North West Regional Secretary Obuti Chika was shot dead outside his house in Klerksdorp on Friday morning.
Mantashe told the New Age business breakfast in Mangaung that for some ANC members, elections were a life and death situation because it influenced their livelihoods.
He said previously the ANC was a tight-knit organisation, but now that it is open to everyone, it also attracts bad elements.
"Because people think that if you are in a particular position, you are an obstacle."
Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said the Manguang conference, where delegates will elect the ANC's top six leaders and adopt policies, plans to deal with these elements.
The conference gets underway on Sunday.
At the same time, North West Premier Thandi Modise said a number of officials in the province had become targets of violent crime in recent weeks.
