Defender Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela is a free agent after being released by Bidvest Wits.

JOHANNESBURG - Bidvest Wits on Thursday said defender Mbulelo "OJ" Mabizela was put on transfer with immediate effect because club coach Antonio Lopez Habas did not include him in his plans.

The club denied reports that suggested the former Bafana Bafana captain's contract was terminated because of poor discipline.

Wits General Manager George Mogotsi said Mabizela had six months left in his contract and will be paid what was due to him.

"There's no point in keeping him on the bench. We've decided to release him as the transfer window is coming up in January."

Mogotsi says the club has no choice.

"OJ is a good player and a team leader but he has no future in the team so we have to release him."

Wits are currently number seven in the Premier Soccer league (PSL) log following three loses.

Their next game is against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.
