Phosa accepts deputy president nomination
Mathews Phosa says he will be contesting for the post of deputy president in Mangaung.
JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General Mathews Phosa has confirmed to Eyewitness News that he has signed the nomination form to run for the post of deputy president at the party's upcoming Mangaung conference.
This is the strongest confirmation yet that there will be a contest at the party's elective conference.
"I confirm that I have accepted the nomination by the branches of the ANC to be a candidate for deputy president of the ANC. I responded positively to the voices of the branches."
Phosa would not say whether he was looking forward to the contest, but said he would work hard for the ANC.
The conference will start on Sunday and will take place at the University of the Free State.
Meanwhile, the ANC Women's League is holding a gathering on Wednesday evening to pray that the conference runs smoothly.
The League's Zodwa Magwaza says they will be praying for unity within the party.
"All those who are going to serve under the banner of ANC must be united moving forward."
Magwaza, who will take part in the conference, said she will be focusing on issues of gender equality.
"We have to make sure women are included in the broader picture."
It is widely expected that President Jacob Zuma will retain his position within the party.
