Dept. not aware of calls for DG to resign
The Basic Education Dept is not aware of calls for DG Bobby Soobrayan to be fired.
JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department on Wednesday said it was not aware of the calls for Director-General Bobby Soobrayan to be fired.
This after the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) lambasted him for his role in the Limpopo textbook crisis.
It also slammed the education official for the department's failure to provide an increase for matric exam markers.
Some learners in Limpopo schools were left without books for the greater part of 2012 after officials failed to make deliveries on time.
The department was then taken to court for failing to deliver the textbooks on time, even though the department said it was not to blame for the problem.
Basic Education spokesperson Hope Mokgatlhe said they were never approached by Sadtu about Soobrayan.
"The Minister [Angie Motshekga] cannot comment about what is in the statement. unless Sadtu approach her for comment or action."
