JOHANNESBURG - A taxi driver who was caught on camera assaulting a homeless man in Bloemfontein has managed to avoid a jail term.

Aggrey Mojanaga (43) was caught on CCTV in March this year, driving over the pedestrian with his Toyota Quantum on Andries Pretorius Street.

He then got out of the vehicle and kicked 51-year-old Isaac Moalahi in the face before he drove off.

Spokesperson for the Free State National Prosecuting Authority, Phaladi Shuping, on Saturday said Mojanaga was sentenced in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court earlier this week.

Shuping said Mojanaga would only be sent to jail if found guilty on an assault charge.

The Sowetan newspaper has however disputed this. It says "Magistrate Johannes Moeng ordered that Mojanaga could be released under correctional supervision after six months if his behaviour justified it."

The video of the incident, which was captured on security cameras, went viral.
