Person dies in N2 accident
A person has died while others are trapped in their vehicles outside Grabouw.
CAPE TOWN - Traffic is backed up on the N2 highway outside Grabouw following an accident involving three vehicles.
Initial reports suggest one person died while three others are trapped in their vehicles.
The crash caused delays of up to an hour, but it appears the accident scene has now been cleared.
There is debris and luggage on the side of the road, which must have been in one of the vehicles that were involved in the accident.
The crash will not go down well with transport authorities, who have already expressed concerns on the number of people killed in the Western Cape since December 1.
Western Cape traffic authorities say at least 12 people have died on the province's road in the last 48 hours.
On Thursday, six people died when a truck and a car collided between Touwsriver and Laingsburg.
Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says a truck driver was killed in the Hex River Pass near Worcester, while several pedestrians also lost their lives.
"A pedestrian died on the N1 outside De Doorns and last night, another pedestrian died on the N2 outside Somerset West. In another incident, a motorbike driver lost control and died in Gordons Bay."
Meanwhile, two people have been critically injured in a truck accident on the N3 near Vosloorus on Gauteng's East Rand.
It is understood the truck overturned earlier in the day.
Officials say it is still not clear what caused the accident, but a helicopter was dispatched to the scene and a second one has now been sent out.
Netcare 911's Werner Vermark says, "Expect road closures on the N3 towards Johannesburg in the Verwoed Park area."
