Kgalema Motlanthe said President Jacob Zuma became a ‘seasoned freedom fighter’ during apartheid.

POTCHEFSTROOM - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on Thursday sung President Jacob Zuma's praises at an ANC lecture on peace, freedom and security in the North West.

The deputy president told delegates in Potchefstroom about the president's role in the ANC during apartheid South Africa.

The two leaders are currently being pitted against each other in the ANC leadership race, which will take place in Mangaung from December 16.

Zuma has already been nominated by six provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

On the other hand, Motlanthe has only been able to secure votes from Gauteng, the Western Cape and Limpopo.

The deputy president said Zuma's time at Robben Island produced a seasoned freedom fighter.

"Comrade JZ was a seasoned freedom fighter, who understood how to conduct underground work."
