CAPE TOWN - Cape Town fire and rescue services said on Wednesday a fire on Table Mountain is now under control.

The blaze broke out during the early hours of Wednesday morning forcing the evacuation of a number of homes on the slopes of the mountain.

Rescue services started fighting the flames around 3am on Wednesday morning, but managed to get it under control by sunrise.

It is unclear what caused the fire.

The service's Theo Layne said, "We're being assisted by helicopters as well as the City of Cape Town. There was no damage to any property."
