Popcru members stage sit-in
Popcru wants top cop Janet Basson to address claims on police racism in the Northern Cape.
NORTHERN CAPE - Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) on Tuesday staged a sit-in at Northern Cape Police Commissioner Janet Basson's office.
This after she failed to meet with them to discuss claims of racism.
Popcru said black officers in the province's dog unit were subjected to bad treatment by white superiors since 2010.
The union added Basson failed to act on the problem.
Northern Cape Popcru Secretary Boitumelo Pheleo said they were threatened with arrest by senior police in the province.
"They said if we don't vacate these offices they will come to arrest us. That is one thing we are willing to go through."
But Basson slammed the sit-in as "unacceptable" and said she had a valid reason for leaving her office.
"I think it is totally uncalled for. I personally informed them that I had to reschedule. They expect me to call the national commissioner (Riah Phiyega) to say I can't make it to see her."
