Musa Khumalo's death a mystery
Wanted criminal Musa Khumalo was found hanging in a Pretoria police cell at the weekend.
PRETORIA - Mystery still surrounds the death of Musa Khumalo, a criminal and police impersonator.
Khumalo was found hanging with blankets in his Pretoria police cell at the weekend.
He was arrested for murder in Johannesburg, but escaped police custody and fled to Durban.
He was then rearrested for another crime and once again managed to abscond.
Police have been tight-lipped about the circumstances surrounding his death, only confirming the incident.
The police's Puti Setati said, "He was later detained at Moot Police station in Pretoria. A few hours after his detention, he was found hanging in his cell."
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was brought in to probe the possibility of foul play.
The Zimbabwean national managed to secure a South African passport and allegedly impersonated a police brigadier in KwaZulu-Natal.
It was also reported that he faked his own death in Zimbabwe before arriving in South Africa.
