CAPE TOWN - A Worcester police officer has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old boy.

The 48-year-old warrant officer is believed to have sexually assaulted his neighbour's son in June.

The teenager, who was alone at home while his mother was working night shift, looked for safety at the suspect's house after hearing suspicious sounds.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate's Moses Dlamni says the matter is under investigation.

"He confided to his mother in October and this matter was reported to the police, who then reported it to Independent Police Investigative Directorate. We conducted an investigation and based on the evidence, we decided to arrest him."

The policeman is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
