Popcru to meet with Phiyega

Popcru claims senior police officials tried to sweep complaints under the carpet.

JOHANNESBURG - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said on Sunday it planned to meet with National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega about the alleged mistreatment of its members in the Pretoria special task force.

27 of 35 members of the unit have applied for transfers after their concerns were allegedly not addressed for more than two years.

Popcru's Lebogang Phepheng claimed senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officials also tried to sweep complaints under the carpet.

"The only time that they went to the unit was on 20 November.

"They did not investigate.

"They discouraged our meetings as Popcru with the management of the unit.

"And still nothing has been resolved."

But Phepheng said since they were alerted to the complaints, Phiyega has pledged to intervene.

"We received a call from the National Commissioner on Friday evening; to promise her intervention and also, that we will get a report during the course of next week."
