Will Motlanthe challenge Zuma?

The deputy president could find himself completely out in the cold if he challenges Zuma.

JOHANNESBURG - With just over a week to go for ANC branches to finalise their nominations process, there is still no official sign from Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe as to whether he will accept a nomination.

It appears that branches in Gauteng, Limpopo and parts of the Eastern Cape want him to take over as ANC president at Mangaung, even though the majority of branches around the country want President Jacob Zuma to stay on for a second term.

As more ANC branches nominate Zuma, Motlanthe now needs to decide if he will run against Zuma.

If he stays with the Zuma ticket, there is a strong chance he will return as deputy president of the ANC.

Motlanthe could however find himself completely out in the cold if he challenges Zuma.

The ANC's electoral conference gets underway on December 16.
