Cabinet sympathetic with Lenasia residents
Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale will intervene in the Lenasia demolitions saga.
JOHANNESBURG - Cabinet said it sympathised with Lenasia residents whose homes have been demolished.
Earlier in November, more than 80 structures were torn down in the area after residents were sold government-owned land by a syndicate.
Some of those arrested in connection with the illegal sales are Gauteng Housing Department officials.
Acting Cabinet spokeswoman Phumla Williams said, "The [Human Settlements] minister [Tokyo Sexwale] was mandated to go and urgently interact with the Gauteng provincial office, to find a way of resolving the matter in an amicable manner."
The minister will also look into the Gauteng Housing Department's call for a review of "the Prevention of Illegal Eviction Act".
The decision was taken at cabinet meeting in November.
