CAPE TOWN - Springboks Sevens playmaker Cecil Afrika has not recovered in time for the next leg of the Sevens World Series in Dubai.

The Blitzbokke named a 12-man squad on Wednesday for the next two legs in Dubai and Port Elizabeth in January.

Afrika has not recovered in time following knee surgery after an injury sustained at the Gold Coast tournament in October.

Coach Paul Treu said, "The big name missing is Cecil Afrika. Unfortunately, he didn't recover in time. We are hoping that he's going to be ready for Port Elizabeth."

Captain Kyle Brown says they will have to do without Afrika if he does not recover in time.

"We've got a great set of 12 guys here. If Cecil is not ready for Port Elizabeth, we'll go ahead and play. We'll always miss Cecil because he is a fantastic player, but the show must go on."

The three additions to the squad for the next two legs are Lions eighth-man Warren Whiteley, Cheetahs scrumhalf Kevin Luiters and wing Phillip Snyman.

The tournament starts on November 30.
