CAPE TOWN - Civil society group Right2Know will be staging protests outside Parliament this week, in protest against the Protection of State Information Bill (POIB).

The controversial draft law, dubbed the "secrecy bill", is expected to be debated in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) before a vote is held in the National Assembly.

ANC members of the ad-hoc committee dealing with the bill have been accused of back-tracking on proposed changes, which were initially welcomed.

Right2Know campaigner Vinayak Bhardwaj said: "We seem to be back where we started. Under the secrecy bill, if someone makes the argument that a document is classified, there are automatic grounds for refusal of access to that document - that is a concern for us."
