Police probe Soweto housing scams
A Soweto man accused of illegally selling RDP houses is due in court today.
JOHANNESBURG - A man arrested in connection with the fraudulent selling of RDP houses in Dobsonville, Soweto, is expected to appear in court on Friday.
It is believed he posed as a lawyer collecting money and made the buyers sign fake documents confirming that they would receive the houses.
He then disappeared with their money.
Last week, a woman was arrested in neighbouring Meadowlands for conducting a similar scam.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said authorities are investigating the growing number of housing scams in the township.
He said they received several claims about people who had been scammed out of money.
Police hope their investigation will uncover culprits and determine whether the cases are linked.
