JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Mineral Resources on Thursday called on the Hawks to investigate illegal gold processing allegedly happening on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

Several people have been seen crushing ore to extract gold in a gravel pit near Soweto in recent weeks, prompting the Democratic Alliance (DA) to demand a probe.

DA Shadow Minister of Mining James Lorimer alerted the department about the illegal refining in October.

He said by last week, no action had been taken.

"The Department of Mineral Resources didn't know about this. Because all of this is illegal, they have passed it on to the Hawks."

On Thursday, Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko confirmed they have inspected the site.

"At this stage, we do not have any criminal case registered, only an inquiry. No arrests have been made."

The illegal miners are believed to have been operating in the area for several months.
