Marikana miners ‘finished off’
Advocate Dali Mpofu says evidence will show that police “finished off” the injured miners.
RUSTENBURG - Advocate Dali Mpofu on Thursday told the Marikana Commission of Inquiry that evidence will show that police "finished off" miners who were laying on the ground dying.
He made the comments during a hearing into the killing of 34 Lonmin miners during a confrontation with police in the North West mining town on August 16.
The workers were protesting over poor wages.
Acting on behalf of the miners, Mpofu asked Warrant Officer Patrick Thamae if he was aware of the police's actions during the bloody shooting.
"Some of the people that were finished off, as it were, and shot at close range after the shooting that we saw on television," the advocate said.
Thamae said he only arrived on the scene after the shooting, but was told that officers acted in self defence.
It also emerged that the crime scene was tampered with, and that bodies and weapons were moved.
