Treasury to help stop rhino poaching
Environmental Affairs will approach the Treasury in a bid to strengthen the fight against rhino poaching.
CAPE TOWN - Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Tuesday her department and provincial departments will jointly be asking the National Treasury for greater appropriation for rhino poaching enforcement.
Since the beginning of the year, 549 rhino have been killed - which is an increase over the same period last year.
The department briefed the parliamentary portfolio committee on Water and Environmental Affairs on Tuesday on the latest statistics and the capacity of provinces to fight poaching.
It has emerged that all of the provinces have vacancies in their enforcement capacity, with Mpumalanga reporting 57 vacant posts.
The minister said they are working with provinces to identify what they need.
"We are planning to approach Treasury as a collective, not as individual departments, so that we can submit a bid as a collective to sensitise Treasury and government to the needs in this industry."
