CAPE TOWN - A Mitchells Plain mother who was convicted on Monday for murdering her two-year-old son said she wanted him to be in a better place.

Zulpha Jacobs made the admission in a plea bargain with the state.

She will serve a 20-year jail term for her son Tariq's murder last year.

Jacobs admitted that she suffocated the little boy, by shoving his head into a sand dune in Beacon Valley.

Tariq's aunt, Tawgheeda Davids, reacted tearfully, after hearing about the sentence.

"It's justified for the law of South Africa but it's not going to bring Tariq back; it doesn't matter how many years she gets."

She said the families knew what was coming.

"We knew; the state advocate spoke to us. We just didn't know it was going to be that hard. We have to forgive, in our religion, we have to forgive."

In her final words to the court, Jacobs' lawyer read out a letter asking the families for their forgiveness.
