Plane aborts takeoff, tyre burns
ACSA says 127 people were on board a plane involved in an accident at OR Tambo.
JOHANNESBURG - The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) says 127 people were on board a charter plane that caught fire at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning, while it was aborting takeoff.
One of the aircraft's tyres exploded, triggering the blaze.
It was destined for Lilongwe, Malawi, officials say.
ACSA spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis says the plane was taking off from the airport's cargo area.
No injuries have yet been reported.
The fire has been extinguished and ACSA says only one runway is currently open at the Johannesburg airport.
