CAPE TOWN - Two people have been killed in an overnight shack fire near Milnerton.

City Fire Service's Theo Layne says the blaze gutted one shack in the Joe Slovo Park informal settlement in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, an overnight fire destroyed a large part of the Green Point Bowling Club.

It was initially thought two people lost their lives in the blaze, but Layne says nobody was hurt.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and no injuries were reported. The building was unoccupied at the time."

Broken glass and charred wood littered the blackened floor of the smoky clubhouse.

The roof has caved in, yet outside the almost completely destroyed building, the bowling greens are untouched.

Green Point Bowling Club President John Taylor says he is relieved the fire did not spread.

"The place has been here since 1906. These greens are the best in Africa. They are not damaged."

Taylor says it is going to cost them a fortune to repair the damaged club house.

He says the club now needs help from community members.
