CAPE TOWN - A Hawks captain's corruption case has been postponed in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.

On Friday, the magistrate heard that Patrick Siyali's lawyer had withdrawn from the case and that the suspect needed time to give instructions to his new lawyer.

Siyali, who worked in the Hawks' commercial crimes unit, faces charges of corruption, extortion and theft.

It is alleged he and another police officer were trying to extort money from a woman linked to a syndicate.

Siyali is currently out on bail.

Lawyer William Booth said, "All the evidence contained in the police docket is with the prosecuting authority and by law, we're entitled to get all of those statements and documents. I'll have to get it and go through that with my client.

The case will return to court in January.
