ALIWAL NORTH - President Jacob Zuma on Friday said former President Thabo Mbeki was able to create macro-economic stability and bring in economic protection for the country's people.

Zume delivered a lecture in honour of Mbeki in Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape as part of the African National Congress (ANC)'s centenary celebrations.

In the speech, which was aired live by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Zuma looked back at Mbeki's role in the ANC while it was led by Oliver Tambo.

"Comrade Mbeki succeeded to do something that many found very difficult to do - to draft for President Tambo. He was a very difficult leader to draft for and only Mbeki succeeded."

He also said it was also under Mbeki's presidency that social grants were introduced in South Africa, hundreds of laws changed and the rebuilding of the country started.

Zuma also referred to Mbeki as his brother and friend.
