Maties probes allegations of financial misconduct
The Stellenbosch University is investigating a suspected case of abuse of student funds.
CAPE TOWN - The Student Representative Council (SRC) at Stellenbosch University on Friday said it fully supports an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement in its student fees department.
The department's deputy director, Chris de Beer, has been suspended for alleged fraud.
Stellenbosch University's SRC said it will not comment on the details of the case until a formal disciplinary hearing has been concluded.
According to the university spokesperson, Mohammed Shaikh, de Beer's hearing will centre on allegations of non-compliance with accepted university rules and financial procedures.
It is alleged he transferred funds from student accounts to a personal bank account to draw interest.
The university has also refused to divulge details of the case, only confirming de Beer's suspension.
In a statement issued to Eyewitness News , the SRC says it condemns the abuse of student funds, particularly during tough economic times.
It has called for the strongest action to be taken, if anyone is found guilty.
