Weather service issues thunderstorm warning

Drivers are urged to drive cautiously because heavy rains will be pouring in several parts of the country.

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Gauteng on Thursday.

The service received reports of heavy rain and hail in parts of the south of Johannesburg, including Soweto.

The storm moved north, with emergency services remaining on high alert.

Ekurhuleni Disaster Emergency Management spokesperson William Ntladi said, "We are requesting people, especially when driving, to be on high alert because there could be a lot of damage."
