New bank notes launched in SA
Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus on Tuesday launched South Africa's new bank notes.
PRETORIA - Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus on Tuesday launched South Africa's new bank notes by popping into her local grocer and using the tender.
The new notes, in the same denominations, still bear the big five.
But they now also feature the face of world icon and former president and Nelson Mandela.
Consumers paying for goods with cash will now get a glimpse of Madiba's smiling face.
With the first transaction using the new tender, Marcus bought a bag of beetroot, a watermelon and some almonds.
But there is more to the crisp notes than just a facelift.
Marcus has urged South Africans to familiarise themselves with the added security features.
"You can feel the difference with the razed print, and if you tilt it, you can see how the colour changes and bar changes."
The new notes will be supplied to ATMs and banks from Tuesday.
