Madiba bank notes in circulation
Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus launched the new Madiba bank notes on Tuesday morning.
JOHANNESBURG - The new bank notes bearing former president Nelson Mandela's face will start circulating from Tuesday.
Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus launched the notes earlier by spending a few of them at her local green grocer.
Marcus said although there has been an increase in the use of bank cards for transactions, the use of cash has not diminished.
"We have to replace the entire use of the current notes. The total use of the notes was about R102 billion in circulation.
She said they will continue phasing out the old notes, and introducing the new ones.
"You can feel the difference with the raised print and if you tilt it you can see how the colour changes and the bar changes."
She encouraged consumers to familiarise themselves with the added security features.
"They are of equal value, there's no difference and they will co-circulate."
