WC protesters torch vineyards
Western Cape protesters have started burning vineyards along the N1 Highway in De Doorns.
CAPE TOWN - Protestors have set fire to several vineyards along the N1 Highway in De Doorns as they demonstrate over a lack of jobs.
Hundreds of people, believed to be farm employees or job seekers, blocked the highway between De Doorns and Touws River.
There are around 100 farms in the region, largely producing grapes.
Agri WesCape's Porchia Adams says it is still unclear exactly why people are protesting.
"The issue that came up is that they are protesting about work that they don't have. They are now burning vineyards, so it's very confusing."
Police are patrolling the area.
Adams says the situation has been chaotic.
"The vineyards are on both sides of the highway, which makes it very difficult to control them [the protesters]."
Earlier, the road was closed to traffic but has since reopened.
