JOHANNESBURG - A police officer was arrested on Monday for his alleged role in a blast that killed three awaiting trial prisoners.

In a daring escape attempt, prisoners set off an explosive device in a van transporting 38 men from the Randburg Magistrate's Court to the Johannesburg Central Prison.

Three people were killed and 14 others injured in the October blast.

Last week, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the prisoners who planned the escape attempt had outside help in getting explosives into the vehicle.

On Monday, an officer working at the Randburg Magistrate's Court was arrested.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said, "He will be charged and will appear in court tomorrow. He faces three counts of murder and 35 of attempted murder."
