A dream dies - Tygerberg Zoo closes
The animal sanctuary near Paarl is shutting its gates for good this time.
CAPE TOWN - Tygerberg Zoo owner Lorraine Spence said on Wednesday she is disappointed animals seem to be featuring less on the priority list of the human race.
The animal sanctuary outside Paarl is shutting down for good, due to financial woes.
Most of the animals have been moved to other parks, while the chimpanzees will be relocated to a nearby lion park.
Spence said funding has forced her to give up her husband's dream of a safe haven for animals.
"I started experiencing this about ten years ago. There was a total lack of interest. Five years ago they took the zoo off the school curriculum. It is very sad that people have lost interest in animals."
She said she does understand there are many people in need and times are tough.
"Everybody is being pressed to help for different things, human things, which don't affect animals at all."
Tygerberg Zoo will be open on Sunday, which will be the last day for public visits.
