JOHANNESBURG - A Tshwane metro policeman was shot dead on Tuesday, in a shooting in Hebron, near Ga-Rankuwa.

The 43-year-old man was on duty with two colleagues last night, when they suddenly came under attack, the city's metro police department said.

Spokesperson Console Tleane said the officers had stopped a vehicle and issued a fine to a man driving a defective vehicle.

He said after the officers issued the fine, four suspects emerged and one of them opened fire on the officials.

Tleane said a shootout ensued and back-up was then called.

Two suspects, one of whom was caught and beaten by community members, were arrested following the incident.

The search for two remaining suspects continues.
