Case opened against Amplats security

An attempted murder case was opened against an Amplats security guard who shot a striking worker.

RUSTENBURG - Police on Tuesday opened a case of attempted murder after a miner was shot by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) security at the Bathopele mine shaft in Rustenburg.

Police said striking miners stopped a truck that was delivering a payload between two mine shafts on Tuesday.

When security arrived on the scene, one guard used live ammunition to disperse the crowd.

North West Warrant Officer Sam Tselenyane said, "The mine security responded to a call where there a shooting towards to direction of the striking miners."

The miner was shot in the leg and is receiving treatment.

No arrests have been made.
