PRETORIA - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said on Sunday unrest in various parts of the world could be resolved if progressive organisations worked together.

Speaking at a three day international solidarity conference in Pretoria, Motlanthe told delegates to use lessons from the past to better society.

Motlathe said the apartheid system collapsed because the progressive movements from all over the world worked together.

"If we are dispersed and consumed by our own peculiar and isolated challenges, there will be no time and space to deal with common issues."

He congratulated the organisers of the event saying it was a big step towards resuscitating the activism which led to the fall of the nationalist government.

The conference adopted resolutions on various issues including the civil war in Syria, Sudan and the Middle East.
