CAPE TOWN - Western Cape MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell said on Friday the safety and security of municipal councillors must be assured at all times.

Around 11 councillors across the peninsula are currently under police protection.

Bredell said there have been instances where they have received death threats and have been intimidated.

However, he said it has not become a widespread problem.

I think we're fortunate that it isn't a general problem; it's a couple of isolated incidents. The municipal manager is responsible for the safety of each councillor."
