NUM satisfied with wage agreements
NUM is finally at ease after weeks of strike action in the gold mining sector.
JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday a wage hike agreement with the Chamber of Mines is a great achievement for workers in the gold sector.
NUM reached a settlement, which will see gold miners receive a salary hike of between 11 and 20,8 percent.
NUM's Lesiba Seshoka said the new agreement with see all Category 3 workers move up a grade.
"This means that a newcomer in the mining industry will have a basic wage of about R5,000 or so."
With benefits, these miners are said to earn R8,000.
Sheshoka said the agreement was accepted by a majority of their members who have now returned to work.
"This agreement benefits between 90,000 and 140,000 workers in the gold sector."
NUM is confident the new wage settlement will restore stability after weeks of strike action in the gold mining sector.
